my first sourdough of 2011

can you believe that i've kept Lucretia locked up and unused until now...?

... i've been feeding her regularly of course... and when i've not been around, Tracey, my good friend and neighbour has popped in to feed her... but I have not baked a sourdough since Christmas...

... and here she is, perfect, proud and as perky as always... a great way to start a weekend!

I used my regular recipe but replaced one of the cups of white flour with a cup of wholewheat flour...

... can't wait for breakfast...

  3. My God! Lucretia is bustin' out! When I initially looked at your loaf, I thought you made a 'stuffy'! That is beautiful! Whatever you're doing with Lucretia, she is lovin' it! Kudos, Dom!

  4. Great looking loaf. I had started a starter a while ago but my mother in law became ill and I forgot to take care and feed her. Not my mother in law by the way I'm taking about the sour dough stater. lol Will have to try again. Every time I see the sour dough bread I wish I had the starter all ready to go.

  12. Oh the shame reading this post bestows upon me. I have successfully made my sourdough starter which is now lurking in the back of the fridge unused ... must fix this as your loaf looks a beauty!!!

  13. It would be a real crime to kill of Lucretia, so jolly glad to see her back on form.

  14. Alas, I had to leave my sourdough starter to a friend when we moved from Charleston, S.C. to Chicago. I've never started another starter. Now I wish I had. I need to put out an S.O.S. for someone to give me a starter for my starter. Sorry, couldn't resist.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  15. Perfect for a weekend bacon butty too! This looks fabulous. How did you get the shiny crust? Is this with an egg wash? And how did you stop it from burning?

  16. @ marmaduke scarlet... no egg wash... just went like that? I do something quite unusual for bread making which is put the bread into a cold oven then switch on... it rises slowly... works for me
