cheese and wine – wine tasting competition

18 May 2014 by Dominic Franks

… as many of my dear readers will know, as well as writing this little blog I also run an event production company called The Persuaders with The Viking… creating brand theatre for some wonderful international brands spanning all kinds of categories from Samsonite to Benefit Cosmetics and just sometimes we get to work with some brilliant food and drink related brands too – many of you will remember our beautiful Pimm’s work last year…

… next week, to celebrate International Chardonnay Day we’re creating the 1853 Club – a pop-up wine bar for Hardy’s Wine.  We’re transforming a blank canvas venue into a cool, contemporary space and as part of the 3 day happening we’re working with Alex James, ex-blur and now cheese-maker extraordinaire and the very talented blogger Miss Bouquet to bring you the chance to taste wine and cheese together and hopefully re-appraise the much maligned chardonnay…

…obviously i’d love you all to come down and meet us and see our work but the good people at Hardy’s have given me a pair of tickets for one of the wine-tasting session to giveaway to one lucky reader of my blog… so, if you’re in London next weekend, do enter the competition!

Competition Details

Winners will be treated to a Chardonnay and cheese pairing tasting where they will enjoy a glass of sparkling on arrival, a diverse range of Chardonnays paired with artisan cheeses by Alex James, followed by a complimentary glass of choice at the bar.

Wine lovers will be introduced to the basics of wine tasting, how to match their favourite grapes with delicious chesses, and learn more about the interesting history and culture of Chardonnay wine.

Hardys’ 1853 Club opens its doors for a limited time only from 23 – 24 May at No.5 Great Newport Street, London. WC2H 7HY.

How to enter
Because the event is happening at the end of the week i’ve decided to keep the entry mechanic really simple.  All you have to do is leave a comment below letting me know your favourite cheese… I will then pick a winner at random once the competition ends.

Terms and Conditions

Winners must be aged 18 and over – competition closing date is 11.59pm 21st May, winners will be notified on 22nd May and must respond within 24 hours to redeem their prize

The winner will receive:
2 x tickets to the Hardys 1853 Club which includes: 1 x glass of sparkling, 3 x taster glasses of wine, 1 x full glass of wine, 3 x taster samples of ‘Alex James Presents’ cheese

Winner must be available to attend the Hardys 1853 Club in London on 23rd or 24th May from 4pm till 11pm

good luck and enjoy!

Wow, wow, wow! I want to go to this so bad, alas, my private jet is in for repairs and civilian flights are just so gosh darn cramped. 😉

Manchego, or a creamy luscious brie. Or may be a crisp cheddar.
Actually, I can't pick just one!

Gruyere de Comte. So difficult to describe, but so easy to eat. It is a little nutty, strong but sweet. It's a hard cheese, but flexible too. I give up describing it, but I love to eat it.

I really love Applewood, or any blue cheeses

I'm having the same trouble… Dom, how about you fly to Elizabeth and I instead? (Preferably you fly to me first and pick me up, then we go to her place. Yes?)

I would really LOVE to be there, apart from your give away, for I am really very fond of cheese AND wine. Let's say I'll be with you “in spirit” 😉

Dom, can there be a better cheese than Lincolnshire Poacher! I tried it because you mention it so often, and it's lovely – a proper, old-fashioned 'cheese how cheese should taste' kind of cheese.

I'm a big fan of the Fleur de Maquis from Corsica!

That pile of cheese has really got me salivating – keep the wine, give me the cheese.

Cake! - is there such thing as a ‘healthy’ cak Cake! - is there such thing as a ‘healthy’ cake?

This fat-free orange and lemon cake is actually an adaptation of the infamous Clementine Cake by @nigellalawson . It’s one of my absolute favourite ‘go-to’ cakes. If truth be told I usually make it at Christmas because its rich almond nuttiness and intense clementine fruitiness is perfect for the holiday season but looking back over the years I realise I haven’t actually made it for about 8 years! So now seems the perfect time to resurrect an old favourite. It’s also a great cake to make if you have an abundance of citrus fruit left over from last year. I always seem to have a few stragglers left in the bowl that really need eating.

vegetable stew with a creamy yoghurt sauce & chedd vegetable stew with a creamy yoghurt sauce & cheddar dumplings with @quorn_uk pieces and @fage_uk yoghurt

The challenge with making food or diet-related New Years resolutions is that it tends to be pretty damn cold this time of year and all we really want to eat is warming soups and stews which often tend to be quite naughty. With this stew I’ve tried to cut down the fat but still make it unctuous and satisfying although the dumplings are a total cop-out but I’m thinking that this is a ‘one bowl meal’ and I’m not saving it with any other carbs so I’m letting myself off here!

Roast Brussels Sprouts Fajitas with homemade Oat-F Roast Brussels Sprouts Fajitas with homemade Oat-Flour Tortillas

Not more Brussels sprouts I hear you cry! But like puppies, Brussels are not just for Christmas. They are a very versatile vegetables and can be used in so many recipes, plus they’re packed with the good stuff. They’re high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making them a nutritious addition to your diet. They also come with added health benefits, including the potential to reduce the risk of cancer, decrease inflammation and improve blood sugar control. If all this isn’t good enough for your wellbeing then ive added some tangy Mexican-inspired spices and some homemade tortilla’s to remind us all of the sunshine and holidays… remember them?
